Neighborhood
El Cabanyal is the maritime district of the city of Valencia. Its peculiar grid pattern derives from the alignments of the old barracks parallel to the sea. Initially a fishing village, today it has become an area of interest as a place of rest and leisure.
The first population center that emerged in the area was a small group of huts and shacks. By the end of the 17th century, the Cabañal had become a popular place for Valencians who wanted to live between the beach and the orchard, so they began to build farmhouses near the huts.
The core of Cabañal was declared BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural) by the Generalitat Valenciana in 1993. The decree emphasizes the peculiarity of the urban fabric of the neighborhood, in which a popular architecture of clear eclectic roots is developed.
It is a neighborhood that preserves the pure essence of its «picturesque» architecture, as Nick Inman of the British newspaper «The Guardian» writes in his review, which places Valencia's Cabanyal neighborhood among the ten «coolest» in Europe.Two-story houses of modernist style and viewpoints that allowed to see the arrival of the boats to the beach are two of its signs of identity still visible.
